Building a farm-friendly system to deploy and control autonomous robots

Overview
Spraying herbicide on commercial farms is both time-consuming and hazardous. Moss Robotics developed an autonomous robot to handle the task, but they needed a user-friendly interface to control it. The Moss team approached us to help design a digital system that would allow farmers to easily manage a fleet of robots in the field.
The challenge
Design a digital tool for farm workers to efficiently manage the herbicide-spraying robots, and free workers to focus on other high-value tasks around the farm.
Our solution

A mobile application that helps multilingual farm workers deploy robots effectively, easily monitor their progress, and quickly resolve any issues that arise in the field.

Eliminating excess operational costs

Increasing efficiency through automation

Safer conditions and more meaningful work

Key features
01
Monitor progress at a glance
Using rich visual cues to help users easily scan essential status information in a single place

02
Support rapid troubleshooting
Facilitating timely human intervention when critical system errors occur in the field
03
Simplify deployment prep
Allowing workers to plan in advance, use structured templates, and quickly reference historical records

My role
I was involved in key UX design activities from concept to delivery, including early sketching, feature definition, storyboarding, wireframing, rapid prototyping, and contributing to the final high-fidelity designs.
I planned and executed research efforts such as user interviews with spanish-speaking farm workers, domain expert interviews, workflow analysis, and usability testing to inform and validate design decisions.
As project lead, I guided the product vision and scope to ensure our solution met both user needs and client goals. I also provided front-end development support for the final implemented web application.

In summer 2024, Moss launched its first commercial offering, built on our mobile designs and design system. While the company has since pivoted in response to market conditions and evolving customer needs, our work formed the foundation for their initial product.
